15 arpents under cultivation, with an expected production of 135 tonnes by year-end

As part of its ongoing contribution to Mauritius’ agricultural sector, the Sugar Investment Trust (SIT) is supporting local food production through the cultivation of Spunta potatoes across 15 arpents of agricultural land.

With an expected production of 135 tonnes by the end of the year, this initiative highlights the importance of making productive use of agricultural land to strengthen local supply, support food security and contribute to the availability of locally grown produce.

Supporting Local Agriculture and Food Security

Agriculture remains an important pillar of Mauritius’ economic development. By investing in food crop cultivation, SIT contributes to efforts to increase domestic agricultural production and reduce reliance on imported food.

The potato cultivation initiative reflects the value of responsible land management and the continued development of agricultural activities alongside SIT’s broader interests in agro-industry, property and energy.

Beyond production figures, local agriculture plays an essential role in supporting the food supply chain and making fresh produce more accessible to Mauritian consumers.

Promoting Healthy Eating

Potatoes are a versatile food that can form part of a balanced diet. Supporting the production of staple food crops also helps raise awareness of the importance of local agriculture in everyday nutrition.

Through initiatives such as this, SIT highlights the connection between agricultural development, healthy eating and the wider objective of building a more resilient local food system.

A Meaningful Message for Pink October

October is also recognised as Pink October, a month dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

While agricultural development and cancer awareness address different priorities, both highlight the importance of investing in a healthier future. By featuring this initiative during Pink October, SIT brings together two messages of public interest: supporting local food production and encouraging greater awareness of health and well-being.

SIT encourages everyone to remain informed about breast health, seek appropriate medical advice and participate in recommended screening programmes.

Investing in Mauritius, Building for the Future

The Spunta potato cultivation initiative reflects SIT’s continued interest in developing its agricultural assets and contributing to Mauritius’ food security objectives.

With 15 arpents under cultivation and an expected production of 135 tonnes by year-end, the initiative represents a practical contribution to local food production and the responsible use of agricultural resources.

Through its activities across agro-industry, property and energy, SIT remains focused on creating sustainable value while contributing to the development of Mauritius.
